My baby guinea pig was treated with a URI on Friday and given Baytril (which worries me because I know that's usually only given to adults, but he only has 1/8th of the pill twice a day, so it's not a lot at all) and a powder for convalescing herbivores. Hello!

Older guinea pigs are more likely to have heart issues than young ones and they may also develop dental problems. Now that we know the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection in a young guinea pig due to lack of nutrition from its mother, we have seen many guinea pigs in other Petco and PetSmart stores with the symptoms of a URI. Now before you go jumping to conclusions, I am not taking my Guinea pig Milton, to the vet. I already have a teenage male, so I knew if I wanted to get him a friend it would have to be younger than him. Untreated URI’s are always fatal and sometimes even treated URI’s can be as well. The vet scared me because she said she wanted to warn us that he might not make it, and didn't ask us to come back which seemed odd to me. Of course I would want to, but my parents don't want to spend 100+ dollars on him to take him to the vet. It is also the cause of two of our guinea pigs deaths and that is with vet visits. A URI is a deadly bacterial infection that can quickly cause death in guinea pigs. I know buying from pet stores is not the best and should rescue or adopt when you can, but there aren’t any breeders near me. Talishan finds a well-set-in URI can sometimes be treated using a combination of doxycycline and baytril for up to a month or even longer if it's being tolerated well.
