So the views alone were worth the trip for me. The rock outcrop on the right is part of Devils Playground.
The area is loaded with old mines, odd rock formations and old mine camps. Follow state route 30 to mile marker 33 and then head west in the mountains. Devils Playground is not your typical playground at the park, but a playground of granitic rock weathered into fantastic forms and eerie shapes. Turn right (east) and proceed 0.2 miles to the first granitic outcrops of Devils Playground. Most crystals are milky white in color, but many clear, facet-quality specimens can be found with a little diligence.
Though rare, smoky, and rose crystals are occasionally discovered. I did not find any but saw some awesome camp spots and formations. Devils Playground is an awesome place that is really unique. Turn right (northeast) on Nevada State Highway 233 (also Utah State Highway 30) for 57 miles to Emigrant Pass road. Quartz crystals can be found throughout the area in vugs and veins within the granite formations. Known as the Emigrant Pass pluton, this intrusion covers an area of approximately 10 square miles in the southern part of the Grouse Creek Mountains. Take the left fork which slowly takes you south into the playground.
