North Keppel Island (627ha) is part of Keppel Bay Islands National Park located 11 kms off the Capricorn Coast and is surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef. The eastern side is comprised of sheer basalt rock cliffs with very little coral cover. North Keppel Island. Located slightly north of the Tropic of Capricorn and ringed by 28 kilometres of beaches and bays, Great Keppel Island enjoys an ideal sub-tropical climate. North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre has developed this Channel to assist students access lessons, data and clips remotely. It has an environment education centre that is operated by the Queensland Department of Education and Training to provide education about terrestrial and marine ecosystems to students from Queensland schools. North Keppel Island Hilltop Trail is located on North Keppel Island within Keppel Bay Islands National Park. Expansive reef flats surround the island, mainly on the western side. The main islands occupied, were Konomie (North Keppel Island), Woppa (South/Great Keppel Island), and Burye (Humpy Island), and our ancestors travelled between these and other islands in the group for seasonal food collection, while Konomie and Woppa were the primary island locations for fresh water supply. North Keppel Island is run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and is home to the North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre.
