This Escapist film critic says Vin Diesel’s new superhero venture, Bloodshot, is Universal Soldier crossed with The Matrix … a few decades too late. The most noticeable influence is “Universal Soldier,” a film that shares so many plot elements that “Bloodshot” can be classified as a blatant rip-off. That movie spawned three sequels; I can only hope “Bloodshot”’s bloodline ends here. This is a fantastic start to a character whose 90's Valiant version I didn't really care for. Bloodshot is part Universal Soldier, part Jason Bourne. Diesel plays Ray Garrison, who according to the blurb is: Swierczynski writes nonstop action really well. Now, in his first, live-action, superhero saga, Diesel plays the bestselling Valiant Comic book champion "Bloodshot," and comparisons between "Universal Soldier" (1992) and it are inevitable. With his new abilities, he goes after the man who killed his wife, or at least, who he believes killed his wife. Principally, Diesel's heroic super-soldier, Ray Garrison, boasts abilities far beyond anything Jean Claude Van-Damme's Luc Deveraux could muster in "Universal Soldier." Or if you want to go Marvel, he's the Punisher with Wolverine's healing ability. Van Damme's biggest hit – debatably – was a cheerfully nonsensical load of rubbish called Universal Soldier, in which Van Damme starred alongside Dolph Lundgren as soldiers … … Sony Pictures has domestic and international first trailers for Bloodshot, which is apparently an adaption of a Valiant Comics title.
