Throughout its range in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, Utah, Nevada, California and Oregon, the pygmy rabbit requires large expanses of uninterrupted shrub-steppe habitat. The captive breeding program is a cooperative project involving partnerships with Washington State University, the Oregon Zoo, and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park where captive breeding occurs. This rabbit is closely tied to habitats dominated by big sagebrush. The Oregon Zoo was the first zoo in the world to successfully breed pygmy rabbits. The Pygmy Rabbit is the smallest rabbit in the United States. In Oregon, pygmy rabbits have been found east and south of a line connecting Klamath Falls, Fremont, Redmond, and Baker City. Pygmy rabbits use tall, dense clumps of basin big sagebrush. Pygmy rabbits are burrowing rabbits that only live in the sagebrush steppe. Pygmy Rabbits are dependent upon sagebrush for winter food.
Because of many factors, the sagebrush steppe is declining and is one of our most threatened ecosystems here in the U.S. The Pygmy rabbit is an Oregon Conservation Strategy Species in the Northern Basin and Range ecoregion. The breeding program commenced when the remaining 16 Washington pygmy rabbits were placed in programs at the Oregon Zoo, Washington State University and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Washington, in collaboration with the WDFW and U.S. In addition to helping other endangered wildlife, the Oregon Zoo had a recovery program for the Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahownsis).
